MONADNOCK CONSERVANCY ESTABLISHES
100th CONSERVATION AREA

( KEENE)—The Monadnock Conservancy and the E. Allen and Nancy R. Holbrook Family Trust recently signed a conservation easement protecting approximately 222 acres in Richmond. The easement marks the Conservancy’s 100th transaction and protects land that has been in the Holbrook family since early in the 20th century.

Protecting frontage on Falls Brook and Fish Hatchery Road, the easement also conserves managed forestland, wetlands, and wildlife habitats. The property links two large conservation areas, is a certified Tree Farm, and is in a priority focus area for the Quabbin-to-Cardigan Conservation Collaborative. It is also the site of the Isiah Ballou homestead (founder of the Unitarian Church) and a former state fish hatchery.

Said Conservancy executive director, Richard Ober, “This is a fantastic conservation property, with both ecological and cultural values. The Conservancy is proud to be a partner with Allen Holbrook in the permanent stewardship of this very significant place.”

By giving or selling a conservation easement deed to the Conservancy, a landowner agrees to restrict future development, while still retaining ownership of the land. Forestry, agriculture, trails, and related activities are usually still allowed. The Conservancy is responsible for watching over the land and enforcing the terms of the agreement forever.

The Monadnock Conservancy is a nonprofit membership-supported land trust based in Keene, New Hampshire, and serves the 35 towns of the Monadnock Region. The mission of the Monadnock Conservancy is “To identify, promote, and actively seek protection of significant natural, aesthetic, and historic resources in the Monadnock Region; and to monitor and enforce the protection of lands in the trust.” The Conservancy currently oversees 100 conservation areas covering more than 7,000 acres throughout the Monadnock Region. The organization protects hundreds of new acres every year.
