MONADNOCK CONSERVANCY PARTICIPATES IN NATIONAL ACCREDITATION PROGRAM

Invites comments on 42 indicator practices

( KEENE) – The Monadnock Conservancy has been selected as one of 22 land conservation organizations from 19 states to test a new national accreditation program. An independent program of the national Land Trust Alliance, the Land Trust Accreditation Commission will recognize conservation groups that meet the most rigorous standards for protecting forests, farms, recreation lands, shoreland, natural areas, and other significant land.

“The Monadnock Conservancy has long been a supporter of the Land Trust Alliance’s efforts to build the collective strength of the land trust community,” said Monadnock Conservancy executive director Richard Ober. “We are pleased to be part of this important pilot.”

As part of the accreditation process, the Land Trust Accreditation Commission will accept signed, written comments on the Conservancy’s work until July 11, 2007. The public is invited to learn more and submit a comment by visiting www.landtrustaccreditation.org.

The accreditation program will be tested in 2007 and will be available to more than 1,200 land trusts around the country in 2008. At that time, land trusts can join the ranks of other nonprofit organizations that gain professional recognition through accreditation, such as museums, zoos, aquariums, colleges, and hospitals.

Founded in 1989, the Monadnock Conservancy works with landowners and community groups to identify and set aside hundreds of acres of highly significant land in the 35-town Monadnock Region every year. Currently, the Conservancy oversees more than 9,000 acres in 116 separate parcels. The Conservancy is a private non-profit organization supported by more than 900 members throughout the region.
