SALE OF TEMPLE MOUNTAIN CHAIRLIFT SEATS
WILL BENEFIT LAND CONSERVATION
(TEMPLE) – Monadnock Region residents who enjoyed skiing at Temple Mountain can now own a piece of the former ski area and support local conservation efforts at the same time. How? By purchasing one of the chairlift seats from the main lift at the mountain. The four-person wooden slat chairs can be used for porch and tree swings or mounted as benches.
Proceeds from the sales will support the Monadnock Conservancy in its land conservation work, including its efforts to establish a conservation area on and around Temple Mountain. Chairs will sell for $100 onsite or $150 delivered within a 10-mile radius of Temple Mountain.
Temple Mountain Ski Area closed for good in 2001. The 352-acre property has been owned since 2004 by John and Connie Kieley of Temple, who were original members of a local citizens’ group called “Friends of Temple Mountain.” (John Kieley is also a member of the Monadncock Conservancy Board of Trustees.) The goal of the “Friends” group was to protect the mountain’s wildlife, scenic views, and backcountry recreation when it became clear that there were no viable developers interested in reopening the ski area. Town officials in Sharon, Peterborough, and Temple supported those goals during meetings with the “Friends” group in 2003, and several conservation organizations have also been actively involved.
Chairs will be available at Temple Mountain starting Sunday, June 5, as part of the Monadnock Milers annual 10-mile road race, and on Saturday, June 11, from 9 a.m. to noon. A pick-up truck or van will be needed to transport a chair. The Monadnock Milers race runs from Wilton to the summit of Pack Monadnock, with closing ceremonies at the base of Temple Mountain.
